You are currently viewing Heat Damaged Your Driveway? What Can Be Repaired and What Needs Replacing

A long spell of hot weather can leave its mark on a driveway. Once temperatures drop and the surface firms back up, some problems fade away. Others stay put and start to get worse.

If you have noticed cracking, ruts, or soft patches this summer, the first question is usually a simple one. Can it be repaired, or does the whole thing need replacing? The honest answer is that it depends on the surface, the extent of the damage, and the condition of what lies underneath. Here is how to tell the difference.

First, Is It Actual Damage or Just the Heat?

Not every mark left by hot weather is a lasting problem. Tarmac and surface dressing both contain bitumen, which is the black binder that holds the surface together. Bitumen softens when it gets very hot, so you may see scuffing from sharp turns or small indentations from tyres and kick-stands during a heatwave. In many cases these are temporary and settle once the surface cools.

Lasting damage tends to show up as cracking that does not close back up, ruts that stay in place, crumbling edges, or sections that feel brittle. If you are seeing these, it is worth a closer look.

What Can Usually Be Repaired

Plenty of heat-related damage can be fixed without replacing the whole driveway. Repairs are often the sensible choice when the damage is limited to the surface and the base underneath is still sound.

Common repairs include patching cracks and holes, resurfacing a small area that has broken up, and overlaying a surface that is faded or worn but structurally fine. For minor or short-term fixes, cold lay tarmac can be used to fill patches and holes quickly.

Overlaying is often the most cost-effective option. It involves laying new material over the existing surface, provided that surface is stable enough to act as a sound base. Tarmac, asphalt, and tar and chip can all be overlaid with the right preparation, such as priming or a binding layer. This can save a good deal compared with a full rebuild.

What Usually Needs Replacing

Some damage goes beyond what a repair can fix. If a surface is brittle, crumbling, or breaking away, particularly around the edges, then patching over it will not hold for long.

The other key factor is the sub-base, which is the foundation underneath the surface. If the ground beneath has failed, moved, or was not properly prepared in the first place, then a new surface laid on top will simply develop the same problems again. In these cases, full removal and replacement is the more reliable choice, even though it costs more upfront. It gives you a properly prepared base and a surface built to last.

Block paving is a slightly different case. Because the blocks interlock and can shift over time, damaged areas usually need lifting and relaying rather than patching.

Why a Professional Assessment Is Worth It

From the surface, it can be hard to tell whether a crack is skin deep or a sign of something more serious underneath. That is where an experienced eye helps. A good contractor will check the condition of the base as well as the surface, and will tell you honestly if a repair will do the job rather than pushing for a full replacement you may not need.

A simple tip is to ask whether your current driveway can serve as a sound base for an overlay. If it can, you could save a significant amount. Not every contractor will suggest this, so it is always worth asking.

Get Your Driveway Checked

If the hot weather has left your driveway looking worse for wear, it is better to have it looked at sooner rather than later. Small problems left alone tend to grow, and water getting into cracks over the coming months can make things worse.
