Summer is nearly over. The long dry spell looks set to break, and rain is on the way. If you have been thinking about a tar and chip driveway, the timing matters more than you might expect.
Here is why late summer is the moment to act, and what happens if you leave it.
What is tar and chip?
Tar and chip is a traditional way to surface or refresh a driveway. You might also see it called surface dressing, chip and tar, or spray and chip surfacing. The method is simple. We spray a layer of bitumen onto the surface, then spread stone chippings over the top. The chippings are rolled in so they bond firmly.
The result is a hard-wearing, textured finish. It seals the surface against water, improves grip, and blends well with rural and period properties.
Why the weather matters
Tar and chip depends on warm, dry conditions. The bitumen needs heat and dry ground to bond the chippings properly. In cold or wet weather it will not set as it should.
For this reason, the work is best carried out between April and September. That gives the surface the warmth it needs to cure and settle.
The window is closing
We are now in the last stretch of the surface dressing season. Once the autumn rain arrives and temperatures drop, the conditions are no longer right. If you wait too long, the next good window will not be until spring.
So if a tar and chip driveway is on your list, the coming weeks are the time to book. A dry, warm spell is exactly what the job needs.

Is your driveway suitable?
Tar and chip works best on a surface that is structurally sound. If the base is solid, surface dressing seals and protects it, and adds years to its life. If there are deeper problems, such as a failing base or large potholes, those may need attention first.
The easiest way to know is to have us take a look. We will tell you honestly what your driveway needs.
