Winter is hard on driveways. Freeze-thaw cycles, frost, standing water, and heavy vehicles all take their toll. By the time spring arrives, the damage is often visible — and sometimes it's been building quietly beneath the surface too.
The good news is that spring is the best time to assess your driveway and carry out any maintenance. Catching problems early is far less costly than leaving them to worsen.
Here is a simple checklist to work through as the weather improves.
Look for Cracks
Walk the full length of your driveway and look carefully for cracks. Pay particular attention to the edges, which tend to show wear first. Small surface cracks are common and can often be filled. Larger or spreading cracks may indicate a deeper issue with the sub-base.
If you are unsure what you are looking at, it is always worth asking a professional. A short inspection can save a great deal of money in the long run.
Check for Potholes or Soft Spots
Press down gently on different areas of the driveway with your foot. If any areas feel soft or springy underfoot, this could indicate that water has got beneath the surface and weakened the base. Left untreated, soft spots develop into potholes.
Tarmac and tar and chip surfaces in particular can become vulnerable to this after a harsh winter.
Look at the Drainage
Poor drainage is one of the most common causes of driveway deterioration. Check that water is running away from the surface correctly after rain. If water is pooling in certain areas, this is a sign that drainage has become blocked or that the surface has shifted slightly over winter.
Blocked gullies and drainage channels should be cleared as soon as possible.
Clear Weeds and Moss
Spring brings new growth, including weeds and moss in the joints and edges of driveways. Block paving is particularly susceptible. Left unchecked, weeds and moss can work their way into the surface and cause further damage.
Clear them early and consider applying a weed suppressant to slow regrowth.
Inspect the Edges
Driveway edges are often the first area to deteriorate. Look for crumbling, cracking, or any areas where the edge has separated from the surrounding ground. Edge restraints help hold the surface in place, so any damage here can affect the stability of the whole driveway.
Clean the Surface
A jet wash can make a significant difference to the appearance of a driveway and will help you spot damage that is hidden beneath dirt, moss, or leaf debris. Use a suitable cleaner for your surface type — resin-bound driveways in particular benefit from regular cleaning to maintain their appearance.
Allow the surface to dry before assessing any discolouration or wear.
Consider Whether It Is Time to Resurface
If your driveway is showing multiple signs of wear — widespread cracking, potholes, persistent drainage problems, or significant fading — it may be more cost-effective to resurface rather than carry out repeated repairs.
Spring and early summer are the best seasons for resurfacing work. The ground is firmer, the weather is more stable, and new surfaces cure better in warmer conditions.

When to Call a Professional
Some maintenance tasks are straightforward. Others are better left to an experienced contractor. If you notice any of the following, it is worth getting a professional opinion:
- Cracks wider than a few millimetres
- Potholes or soft spots
- Water pooling that does not resolve after clearing drainage
- Edges that are crumbling or separating
- A surface that is more than ten years old and showing significant wear
At Heritage Roadways, we have over 40 years of experience in driveway and surfacing work across the UK. We are happy to take a look at any driveway and give an honest assessment of what is needed — and what is not.
A little attention in spring can significantly extend the life of your driveway. Work through the checklist above, address any minor issues promptly, and call in a professional if you are in any doubt.
Spring is also the ideal time to plan any larger surfacing projects. Whether you are considering a new driveway, a resurfacing job, or repairs to a commercial or rural surface, getting in touch early means we can schedule work at the best time of year.
