We've just finished another surface dressing project in the Cotswolds, this time transforming the long driveway of a beautiful period property using hot bitumen binder and locally sourced Cotswolds washed gravel.
It's the kind of job we love. A sweeping rural driveway, a characterful red brick home, and a finish that looks like it has always belonged there.
The Project
The property's existing driveway had seen better years. Like many long rural drives, it was starting to show signs of wear, and the owners wanted a surface that would stand up to daily use while staying in keeping with the character of the house and its surroundings.
Surface dressing was the ideal solution. It seals the existing surface against water ingress, restores grip and texture, and refreshes the whole look of the driveway, all without the cost and disruption of a full resurfacing.
Hot Binder and Cotswolds Washed Gravel
For this project we used a hot-applied bitumen binder, sprayed evenly across the prepared surface. Hot binder gives excellent adhesion, locking the chippings firmly in place for a durable, long-lasting finish.
While the binder was still tacky, we spread Cotswolds washed gravel across the surface. This warm, honey-toned stone is a perfect match for the area. It complements the local architecture beautifully and gives the driveway a soft, natural appearance that suits a period property far better than plain black tarmac ever could.
The chippings were then rolled in to ensure proper embedment, before the surface was swept to remove any loose stone.

The Finished Result
The completed driveway winds gently past mature hedging and established gardens, with the golden gravel catching the sunlight along its full length. It's a finish that enhances the property rather than competing with it, which is exactly what surface dressing done well should achieve.
The homeowners now have a sealed, protected driveway that will resist potholes and water damage for years to come, with a fraction of the upkeep of a loose gravel drive.
Why Choose Surface Dressing?
Surface dressing is one of the most cost-effective ways to extend the life of a driveway. It offers:
- Protection against water ingress, the main cause of potholes and cracking
- Improved grip and texture
- A refreshed appearance with a choice of natural stone finishes
- Minimal disruption, with most driveways completed quickly
- Years of added life compared to leaving an ageing surface untreated
Summer is the perfect time for surface dressing, as the warm, dry conditions help the binder and chippings bond properly.
