We recently completed a run of estate road work across a private Cotswolds estate, giving the grounds a fresh, durable surface that can handle daily vehicle and visitor traffic without losing the character of the setting.
The project covered three separate roads, each needing a different approach.
Two tarmac roads through the parkland
The main estate roads run through open parkland, past mature trees and grazing land, so they see a steady mix of cars, vans, and delivery vehicles all year round. For these, we laid a new tarmac surface from start to finish.
Our team brought in a Vögele paver to lay the tarmac evenly across the full width of the road, followed by roller compaction to bind the surface and give it the strength to cope with regular use. Once the tarmac was down, we reinstated the verges either side with fresh topsoil, so the road blends back into the parkland rather than looking like a building site.
The result is a smooth, even road surface that will hold up well against weather, footfall, and vehicle weight for years to come.
One surface-dressed lane
The third road was a narrower estate lane, and here we used surface dressing, sometimes called tar and chip. This method involves spraying a hot bitumen binder onto the existing surface, then rolling in a layer of stone chippings. It's a cost-effective way to renew a road surface, seal out water, and improve grip, especially on estate lanes that don't need the same heavy-duty finish as a main access road.
Surface dressing is well suited to rural and estate settings. It keeps costs down while still giving the road years of extra life, and it fits naturally into a countryside setting where a full tarmac finish isn't always necessary.
Why estate owners choose Heritage Roadways
With over 40 years of experience, we've worked on private estates and heritage properties across Suffolk, Essex, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Hertfordshire, Berkshire, and the Cotswolds. We understand that estate roads need to be practical and hard-wearing, but also sit comfortably within a historic or carefully managed landscape.
Whether it's a full tarmac resurfacing project or a more targeted surface dressing job, we plan the work to minimise disruption and reinstate the surrounding areas properly once the job is done.
